The New Covenant places the Ark of the Covenant beside the Virgin Mary. Mary is traditionally understood by Christians as the Ark of the New Covenant. Just as the ancient Ark carried the signs of God’s covenant with Israel, Mary carried Christ. The two halves of the painting connect the Old Covenant with the New.
